An unopened Sigma-Aldrich (P4557) phenol solution bottle was shaken (prior to the addition of the Equilibration Buffer) and a gel-like layer formed at the bottom of the bottle. The upper phase is still liquid. The bottle was shaken briefly after the phenol solution was taken out of +4 C. What should be done? Should it be heated in order for it to return to liquid?

I have worked w/ phenol before, but have never seen it do this. I would suggest that you follow Sebastian Schmitt's suggestion. If that doesn't work, you can try contacting Sigma directly. If there is no regional Sigma facility or Sigma representative near you, you can contact them by e-mail. Sigma is a good company. I have purchased chemicals from them for years. They have a good technical service department and are good at responding to customer inquiries. I'm sure they will help you.

Phenol must be used buffered. If it has recrystallized, simply heat it slightly with stirring. Be very careful. Phenol is dangerous. Wear protective gloves and glasses.
There is no such notion as solidified phenol. It is a new salt compound that must be transformed into liquid phenol. A goos method may be hidrolysis and concentration methods as using filters.
All you need to do is to heat it up slightly, but not with real flame, do that by gently stirring it until it returns to liquid. If this does not work, contact the supplier/company for assistance. Thank you.
