Everybody knows that good melody generates good moods. Did any physicist try to decode musical melody and extract acoustic parameters which correspond or relate to our good feelings?
Actually, always music does not gives you pleasant feelings. Because it is our inner feelings that makes us pleasant and superficial. Some times, a good music does not gives the strength to your soul. When you are very much purified then internal parameters make some effects to your inner self.
You understand this issue better. Maybe I did not formulate the question properly.
For example I did not like Mozart at all. But I like Glinka, Rachmaninov, Tchaykovsky, Skryabin. I like also Hungarian dances of Brahms, his Deutsches requiem, 2nd symphony. I like Shopin as maybe all you.:) Of course I like Beethoven, his string quartets are simply cosmical things written by deaf man!!
All you talk about a resonance. Is it you personal view or there are articles? Please give the references.
In any way the study of human emotional response to musical melody can help in understanding of the psyche, human mentality, soul. I believe in it.
If I would be angry and would write insulting words to you, you would naturally get angry. There would be nothing mystical about this process. By carefully choosing insulting words, it is very easy to make anybody angry. Musical composer carefully chhose their melodies in such a way that a lot of potential listener will be emotionally affected. Nothing mystical about it. In the case of a speech narrative , the words I sent are equivalent to a conversation and when one in unfriendly we become angry. In a musical narrative, the musical sound enter the ears and are interpreted as movement patterns by the body motor systems and so become a bodily expressive narrative which enact certain type of emotions. Emotions are closely linked to certain type of bodily expression, tone of voices and the composer carefully choose the musical sound so it evokes these.
Perception to any kind of "signal" is more dependent on the one who perceives than the signal itself. The same music which might sound "nice" to one person could appear as "noise" to another. It is the mental conditions which predominantly determine the perception, I believe.
Why we feel angry, cry, happy, sense beauty and more and more other small and big moods! Music is completely magic thing. It tell directly to my soul without words or other stimulus! Words are false often and not precise.
An interesting q. Yes , on a personal level I have experienced feelings and emotions when listening to music. I also concur with Vikash. It is also reported that plants respond to good music! It leads to a possibility.. Can we reverse the process and use alpha waves(?) emanating from the cranium to generate music without the composer doing it manually and consciously?
Why doesn`t one create a time-frequency Fourier spectra of simple music, like children`s album of Tchaikovsky? Modern computer can think besides us and deduce the corresponding dependences, like pattern recognition. The similar is made when functional MR images are decoded by computer, see "fantastic" movie "Reading minds" at nature video http://www.nature.com/nature/videoarchive/reading-minds/index.html
