I've heard that you should run a Q-switched ND:YAG laser at its maximum energy q-switch (i.e. for our laser it is 200 uS as opposed to 400 uS) and then knock down the energy with an ND filter as opposed to using a longer q-switch. Why is that? Does it change the beam noticeably? Energy stability concerns or? What can changing the q-switch change about the laser's properties while firing other than energy output?
