There are a lot of programs to help the students and professors, I know by myself about that due that I was professor / teacher in Applied Geophysics as the same time I was (I still on activity) working in the E&P research and development for Oil and Gas industry (Exploration and Production), not only with the most advances technologies in 3D seismic tools, but also with the latest advances in 3D grav/mag modeling and inversion.

I can say you by my own experience, that there are a lot / several companies that try to help students, not only with datasets such as seismic or well-logs or geological data, but also with software’s and with programs of scholarship and training. It is a natural process to sign an agreement between the universities and the oil companies, under a confidentiality’s umbrella, it is a win-to-win scenario, particularly in the case of 3D seismic data that it is the hard data to get, and also because in case of seismic, you must - additionally - need the dataset from well-logs to work in the interpretation.

On the other hand, organizations such as AAPG; SEG; EAGE, AGU, in this COVID-19 pandemic’s time offer a lot of webinars and presentations / virtual events, free. If you chek the web, upcoming free online webinars, just you do have to be registered for the webinars and that´s all!!!

For near surface data in Denmark, I suggest the GEUS databases.

They offer several national databases that are standardized, online and free.

E.g. geophysical (electrical and seismic), borehole and groundwater data.

As you mentioned, a lot of reflection seismic surveys and deep well logs have been acquired by the oil and gas industry. This would be large scale data in your breakdown, but usefull for many types of studies.

The good news is that a large amount of these data sets, an overwhelming amout, are is the public domain. I will give you some details on the United States, but this is true in many western countries where the mineral rights are owned by the nation (National Oil Companies). You could start a search in any country by looking up the National Oil Company, exploration data bases, etc. Some charge for making copies, but may waive this for a university project.

In the United States, for example, the offshore areas that are controled by the federal government (nearly the entine continental shelves and deeper water) release oil and gas industry data sets after a a certian time. For the Pacific area, check out walrus.wr.usgs.gov

Former NBS of USA currently is known as NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology. This is the most complete and the highest authorized collection of any relevant data (physico-chemical properties, transfer coefficients, thermodynamic values, etc.) of any substances as well data of chemical interaction (equilibrium constants, rate coefficients, etc.).

They supply customers with the required information. Of course, there is some inquiry procedure. Go to any NIST page

(e.g. https://en.wikipedia.or/wiki/National_Institute_of_Standards_and_Technology)

and send your appeal in accordance with their rules and demands. That is all.

What do you advise about the continuously recorded geophysical data; may be satellite based , at geo-observatory, private stations etc.. what procedures do we need to have those data and use them for study? Yes you need to go to the website nzpam.govt.nz/our-industry/nz-petroleum/petroleum-data/

and you wil find Petroleum Exploration Data Pack. You have to submit the online application and pay 400 dollars for it. The MBIE will provide a massive data sets.

You will find a world, literally, of open-source data as you learn where to look. Some is nearly free to academics - you pay for your internet connection to download the files. Much is available for the cost of reproduction - files too large for reasonable internet transmission are provided on DVD or hard drives. Begin with the NCEI (https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/) and referenced sources. For Brazil, see http://www.anp.gov.br/ and the link to BDEP; for the UK, try https://www.ogauthority.co.uk/data-centre/ and there are scores of others. Most developed countries support research organizations: AWI, BGR, CNES (France),... you can walk through the alphabet finding data sources. Good hunting!

You can get free academic license for DUG insights...https://dug.com/dug-insight/ it is almost like Petrel.

@Haggg, I dont know of any website that offer free seismic data from North Africa. To the best of my knowledge, you need to contact relevant authorities as most of the seismic data in that region comes under strict proprietary conditions. Best wishes

Recent public satellite-derived gravity data is more useful offshore where it can define features with a half-wavelength (best case) of 6 - 10 km. It can define linear features such as oceanic fracture zones with location accuracy approaching 1 - 2 km because the feature is sampled by many grid nodes. Onshore, feature resolution is lower (20+ km) because the grid is derived from EGM08 or similar. Public magnetic data (EMAG, WDMAM) has highly variable resolution, ranging from sub-km to 200 km (from MAGSAT), depending on the source grids incorporated in the compiled result.

You are the principal investigator so you decide, influenced by the desired depth of investigation. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and resistivity methods are best for very shallow depths while gravity & magnetics will show much deeper features but at longer wavelengths. My practice is "try it and see". Gather examples of the global data from sources mentioned in this thread; and of more local examples from the literature covering your area. Compare to the observed geology and extrapolate.
