I would personally prefer open access or hybrid journals for reading / submit articles but artical processing charge (APC) is a real headache and subscription of journals are not cheap either. If you have a waiver through your institute, its fine. If not, you have to pay your self, not cheap usually. £££ needed. However, if you reside low income country, than you pay less. Open access is very useful your piece/work would be seen,read and more importantly cited by others.

It depends on the discipline. There are disciplines, like mathematics, that OA journals were always there, and it is a dependable publication source, but in other disciplines, especially in the social sciences, there are OA journals that are not dependable, and it is hard to detect their quality. Therefore, for the time being, I prefer the subscription journals, to be on the safe side.

Thank you for your input. I meant a potential but not definite damage to quality of research. its rational rather than absolute. A recent study indicated that OA journals indexed in Web of Science and/or Scopus are approaching the same scientific impact and quality as subscription journals, particularly in biomedicine and for journals funded by article processing charges.

Open access journals indexed in Web of Science following peer review system are more trusted and maintain the scientific background for any discipline of knowledge.

I preferred Open Access Journal (OA) since the payment is so much, I have been submitting my articles where there will be no need for APC. I only go for subscriptions these days. The APC for some journals are killing and unbearable and I kept wondering how those publishing there could afford such crazy APC. Most Journals these days are going for APC. OA journal enhances the visibility of your papers to be read, recommended after read , cited. Most universities in many nations did not subscribe to journals download thereby hindered researchers from such universities and nations. OA will allows your articles to go far and to be read far and cited by anyone without any hindrance.

There are many many SCI/ SCIE journal which are not open access journal but for publishing in those reputed journal they do not take any page chrarges for example zootaxa, CBM etc. If you want to make the your article open access then only they take open access charges.

I publish mostly in reputed SCI/ SCIE journal and I do not pay any page charges for publishing those research paper, of course your paper should be very qualitative paper.

I am for open access journals as they make our work reach a wider range of people, which is very important for scientific work to flourish.

I prefer subscription journals. OA journals asks BIG MONEY for publication, they should change their businesses model that can valued researchers. Some of them published papers with out rigorous review processes.
