This is no big problem according to our praxis. You can control speed of 50 Hz motor with VFD if you consider the following. However, the 50 Hz motors are not foreseen for frequency control. Their winding insulation may be somewhat thinner compared to motors foreseen for frequency control. Motor chokes are recommended to reduce du/dt value applied on insulation. Also, the motor rated voltage should be according to the supply voltage of the frequency converter. Otherwise, the modulated voltage spikes may destroy the insulation. The magnetic circuit, especially the rotor surface may heat more due to pulsating current of frequency control. Also, you need to be sure that the motor does not overheat at the given load and cooling conditions. Also, depending of load type - especially with constant torque - you need to consider if the motor ventilation is sufficient. Generally, you need an external fan under 25 Hz (less than 50% of rated speed).
