I am new in this academic environment but interested to know whether journals publishes narrative reviews. Could somebody help provide methodology to conduct narrative reviews?
Narrative reviews have not been completely replaced by systematic reviews. I think narrative reviews done by experts can still play a role in interpreting findings addressing a broad research question. In narrative reviews, the expert can often point out hypotheses and directions for future research based on his/her comprehensive understanding of the research field.
On the other hand, if all you want to know is if one treatment (or whatever) is better than another and multiple (i.e., 4-5 or more preferably) studies have compared the two treatments (or whatever), a rigorously-performed systematic review conducted with or without a meta-analysis is preferred over a narrative review. It is also preferred when content experts, i.e., those that understand the research question and research field, participate in the systematic review.
FYI, there is no formal methodology for conducting a narrative review as there is for conducting a systematic review.
Yes, journals do publish narrative reviews. Narrative reviews are a type of literature review that summarizes and synthesizes information from various sources to provide an overview of a particular topic. Here are some steps to conduct a narrative review:
1. Define your research question: Identify the topic you want to review and the research question you want to answer.
2. Search for relevant literature: Conduct a comprehensive search of relevant literature using databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus.
3. Select studies: Select studies that are relevant to your research question and meet your inclusion criteria.
4. Extract data: Extract data from the selected studies, including study design, sample size, and key findings.
5. Synthesize information: Synthesize the information from the selected studies to provide an overview of the topic.
6. Write the review: Write the narrative review, including an introduction, methods, results, and discussion.
7. Submit to a journal: Choose a journal that is relevant to your topic and submit your review for publication.Remember, there is no formal methodology for conducting narrative reviews. However, it is important to follow the guidelines provided by the journal you are submitting to. Additionally, you may want to consider the impact factor, publication frequency, and open access options when choosing a journal.
