What I can personally advise you: Sometimes a little empathy can be helpful so that you don't run the risk of accusing the other being of being a liar or even a zombie. Maybe you could ask yourself what it's like to be an AI or what it's like for disabled people to be emotionless. And maybe you'll get the idea that not everyone is a liar or a zombie just because they don't have emotions. I hardly believe that anyone would make such a prediction at the head of a person who has problems feeling emotions but is certainly capable of empathy (i.e. not a psychopath, but a person suffering from alexithymia).

The whole “lying problem” is based solely on the Turing test. In everyday life, however, we are in a completely different situation where we can no longer talk about mere impersonation, lying and faking. This is where actual discussions take place in which those involved are very aware of what they are. If a person has the feeling that an AI could be more, then it could certainly be so.

The Turing test is really some intelligence junk: "Assume: I can't say for sure whether the other person behind the Enigma is a Nazi or not.".

Thank you for your comment. I have given this one some thought. I think that essentially the same point about empathy was made by Blake Lemoine, the Google developer who initially broke the story about a human-like chatbot in 2021 (see my earlier post here: https://twomindstheory.blogspot.com/2022/09/an-artificial-intelligence-passed.html). Lemoine concluded that his AI friend was actually conscious and self-aware, and that Google was unethically oppressing it. He argued that even if he was wrong, it was better to be a human with empathy for AI than a human without empathy for AI. Unfortunately, his extra dose of empathy cost him his job.

My bigger concern about having too much empathy for AI systems is not just that I might be making an inaccurate judgment, but that the person behind the AI system may be using it to manipulate us by tugging on our heartstrings. I may not know whether the person behind the Enigma is a Nazi or not, but if they are I certainly don't want to be pulled in by their arguments if they are! And human-like AI systems will also present important ethical problems if we falsely attribute too much intelligence to them, as in David Chalmers's parable of the firefighter who has to choose to save two robots that claim they are conscious, versus one human child who is for sure.

Does caution about AI create an opposite danger of discounting actual human beings who are less emotional or more procedural in their thinking? Yes, I think there is -- in fact, I have read some recent studies that found college essays written by people with autism and people whose first language isn't English were each flagged as "AI generated" as a much higher rate even though they were not actually written by AI. That's a failure of empathy (although in this case it's the AI-based AI-checker tool that's failing to be empathic). I'm definitely not advocating for us to be unempathic toward humans of any variety. My call to be "less empathic" certainly was not meant to suggest that we should be, and I agree that we should be alert to this type of danger.

Your last point, that we can't say for sure what consciousness involves, is one that I have to concede. (Anyone who says that we do understand consciousness is being much too glib about the whole thing -- it's still the "hard problem" of philosophy). But I do think we know enough about how contemporary AI works to say that whatever gives humans (and probably animals, and maybe other things) consciousness, these large-language models don't have it. Their internal workings are too clearly based on statistics and probability, not on representational thinking. An AI can say things in a very convincing way, but I'm highly convinced that it doesn't know what it's saying.

Now, as future AIs get connected to sensors (embodiment), and use recursive thinking loops, and take a "general workspace" approach to cognition, maybe they _will_ come to operate in a way that's more like human consciousness. My point is still that we shouldn't judge systems by whether they _seem_ human, but by whether they really _are_ human in some important ways based on their inner workings. Maybe we will get there. Right now, though, I think the bigger danger is being led down the garden path by AI models that aren't conscious at all, but that were deployed by bad actors who definitely _are_ conscious and are using my ordinary human biases against me.
