If we choose organic mulching it also adds organic matter to soil. Mulching is beneficial in tropical as well as temperate region on various agronomic crops and improves yields and quality of crop.

Look at the Rodale Institute for information on organic no till technology. Cover crops are mulched to provide soil protection and soil improving using a front end roller and in back no till planter. This is a fully biological system which can be implemented for large scale field cropping.

Another option could be through an employment of animals:

1. leave crop residues in the field after harvest

2. Bring livestock to the field and allow these to consume the crop residues.

2. The time for pasturing depends on: what kind of crop, field size, livestock species (grazer versus browser) and herd size.

Some residues will remain unconsumed thus serving as mulch and in addition to this the manure left by the animals will regenerate in part the fertility of the soil.

A winter rye crop is excellent for controlling weeds and preventing erosion

In the fall season the winter rye is planted densely and when the cover crop is in full flower the roller crimper maintains a mulch for weed control but does not allow the mulch to degrade rapidly giving excelllent weed control

The stage is too old for regrowth and too young to have mature seeds.

The roller-crimper is in the front and in the back is no-till planter and soybean is the ideal crop in the rye.

This is a mechanical and efficient system which controls the weeds but uses no-tillage and is organic.

Using hairy vetch as winter cover is used before maize. The vetch can provide all the nitrogen needs and contribute to weed control. The maize may need scouting for cutworms and the application of BT biological control to maintain the full organic management.

Because these systems improve the soil the replace the continuing need for synthetic chemical inputs.

The biggest limitation of rain fed agriculture is water and these approaches increase the ability of the soil to percolate retain and provide moisture to the cropping system.

For wheat fields mulching could be done by using part of the straw as mulch during the harvest. A slight modification of the combine harvester permits an even spreading of the out coming straw on the field.

Since agronomic crops are short duration , it will not be feasible to use plastic mulch as it will increase the cost of production. Organic mulch like water hyacinth, green manuring crops etc can be used which will enhance the soil properties.

Yes, can be done. it helps to control weed, soil moisture, soil fertility mainly. You can use organic matter, cover crops that grow parallel to the soil, paddy straw, green manure even polythene in the beds etc. On the other hands it helps to control soil erosion and many more advantages.

Mulching with grain crops creates good conditions for the spread of rodents (mice) in a temperate climate. Mice damage the bark system in apple trees. In this case, the likelihood of an increase in the number of mice in the field is negative. Of course, a lot will depend on the region of cultivation and the initial number of mice on the site. Mulching crops of other crops with straw may also increase the number of mice on the site. This must be taken into account and additional measures to control mice must be applied.
