I am reading about MSW thermal treatment (gasification and pyrolysis) and I found that for both processes you can use similar technology, like for example a fixed bed reactor or fluidized bed reactor. So I wonder, you can modify these technologies and adapt them? I understood that pyrolysis normally has the absence of oxygen and gasification use a gasification agent (it can by oxygen)...so these technologies allow to do both thermal treatments and you set the technology to allow or avoid, for example, oxygen inside the reactor and the amount of temperature and this is how you can use the same reactor for these thermal treatments?
It is nor clearly for me because when I look for the technologies for these treatments the same technologies appear.
Please let me know if you have any paper related to these technologies I would love to read it.

Good question.
Ideally, one can use say a fluidised or fixed bed reactor for both pyrolysis and gasification. However, there are issues one needs to take into cognisance before proceeding. First, the composition and particle size of the MSW will play a significant role the choice of reactor. As a rule of thumb, the composition will influence the ignition, reactivity, and products distribution whereas the particle size will influence its ability to undergo self sustained fluidization.
Ideally, if all of these factors are not an issue, one can simply switch the reaction gas (inert gases e.g. nitrogen, helium for pyrolysis OR sub-stoichiometric air, CO2, steam or oxygen for gasification). Lastly, the cost of oxygen or steam is prohibitive and hence more practical to use air for gasification even though the syngas yield and heating value will be lower. Hope this helps.

there have been various attempts for that technology, most of them of them failed due to a lack of economics. The most prominent example is the Thermoselect installation in Karlsruhe, Germany. Another example is the 'NOELL Konversion' Process, which was tested but never built at industrial scale.
The only industrial process I know of with various installations is Ebara in Japan.
