Showcasing Henry Mintzberg’s work, the article argues that, at least originally, the joint purpose for which a group exists is the foundation for everything its members do: from this, basic organizational configurations are devised and come daily into play, e.g., entrepreneurial, machine (bureaucracy), professional, divisional (diversified), innovative, missionary, and political. (Of late, networked organizations have come to the fore and are likely to become ever more common—certainly in hybrid forms). And so, consideration of the moderating role of organizational structure had perhaps best study (i) the original purpose for which an organization was set up; (ii) the extent to which the structures and systems established have served to advance the purpose thus far; and (iii) the degree to which other structures and systems, borrowed from other organizations configurations, might accomplish purpose with more relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability.
