I used a two staged anaerobic digesters in plant design dealing with rice industry waste such as rice husks, rice straws, rice bran, and etc. The confusing part is do i need to feed in microbiomes such as acetogens and methanogens into the bioreactors? If not, the inoculum should consists the microbiomes before entering the bioreactors? Please advice
Yes, you do. You could use degassed sludge from a working digester. We used digested sludge obtained from a anaerobic mesophilic digester of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) as inoculum. @Koenraad @vicky thank you, means that I will not have the microbial consortium suitable for anaerobic digestion in my rice waste? Because i did not do any Co-dogestion, just waste from rice industry, can I load my microbial consortium in the load balancing tank before the two stage anaerobic digester? Or I have to load the microbial consortium directly into each anaerobic digester?
Of course, you should add microorganisms to your reactor due to the dynamics of anaerobic processes. You feed the waste to the digesters such as rice husks, rice straws, rice bran as SUBSTRATES and actually they're the food for your microorganisms. You have your microorganisms in your SEED SLUDGE (you can call it also 'inoculum'). You can determine the amount of seed sludge you put to your reactors from the literature.
We have over 40 years experience in the design and operation of full-scale high rate anaerobic digesters (HRAD) in a broad range of agro-food-beverages industries worldwide. For a quick start-up sufficient quality and quantity of seed sludge from a well performing (HR)AD reactor running on similar waste would be required. We developped guidelines and sludge activity tests (SAT's) for selecting and quantifying the seed sludge. Starting up a rice industry AD with seed sludge only from municipal WWTP sludge digesters is not recommended.
Well, for substrate such as rice husk, rice straws, rice bran will require addition of inoculum into the system in order to aid the digestion process. This is necessary because, it may take a longer retention time for the breakdown of the complex compounds in substrates without inoculum and this may slow down the conversion process. Unlike substrates such as cow dung, industrial wastewater , food waste and sewage may not require inoculum. It is advisable to do Co-digestion for a start.
I think it would be better if you add a pretreatment step before adding inoculum
