I would like to know why isn't the MIC-Minimum Inhibitory Concentration measured as MIC 50 or MIC 90, instead of just 99.9% MIC or complete inhibition? Is MIC 50 acceptable for new antimicrobial? Do companies buy MIC 50 new antimicrobial to use to develop their products?
If it kills only 50%, what about the other 50%?
MIC50 and MIC90 is very much applicable when studying antimicrobial susceptibility. Dear K. Ramalingam, Please refer the meaning of MIC50 and MIC90 from CLSI or any standard guidelines. I am sure the meaning itself will answer your query.

The concept of MIC 90 and MIC 50 are terms widely used in standards such as CLSI. In the case of fungi, is considered to antifungal treatment success not only depends on the agent itself, but also the host immune system, eg. MIC50 is determined assuming that the other 50% of the elimination of the fungus will make the body itself.
Another important aspect to the use of MIC 50 and MIC 90 depends on the nature the agent: For fungicides (eg antotericina B) is used MIC90 and fungistatic (eg fluconazole) is used MIC50
MIC50 and MIC 90 defined as the minimum concentration at which 50% and 90% of the isolates were inhibited, respectively.

Antifungal Susceptibility Testing in Medical Mycology field:
We are actually talking about three different things, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) itself, the MIC 50 and MIC 90.
1- MIC is the Minimal Concentration of an Antifungal necessary to inhibit the growth of a target micro-organism.
2- MIC 50:The MIC50, for example When you do antifungal susceptibility for 100 isolates, gives you the MIC, which inhibits 50% of your isolates
3- MIC 90: while the MIC90 gives you the MIC which inhibits 90% of the isolates of the species, tested.
( MIC 50 = Minimum Inhibitory Concentration required to inhibit the growth of 50% of organisms.
MIC 90 = Minimum Inhibitory Concentration required to inhibit the growth of 90% of organisms)
If only 2-3 strains or just 1 strains are available in any bacterial or fungal species . what is the criteria for MIC-50 and 90
