Which type of research is better in your opinion: excellent research or research that is most impactful in making a difference in solving real-world problem?
We all know that sometime, the most sophisticated research published in high-tier journals has no real-life implications or use.
I think both are important it depends upon the out come of your aims
I would go both methodologically proper and high impact research, a kind of an invention research... many thanks Gulzar for bringing up this nice discussion...

U research must contain novelty first of all. If u book, article is written for first time, then follow good publisher. Organize conferences to let students be published in papers. It is easear than to "attack" high impact journals, although by PhD research the situation is other one

The whole point of doing research is to find ways to make things better (impact life). Thus a research which does not impact life is futile. Nonetheless, it is also worth noting that some research that seemed not to be impactful may be way ahead of it's time and may be relevant in future.

There is some serious overlap, if not 100% of the excellent research and impactful research. Hopefully only best research also is relevant enough to be impactful.
Methodologically excellent OR most impactful research?
Are they mutually exclusive? :)
Research that has tangible and concrete outcomes that help maintain and/or develop real life and global community is much more preferrable.
Applied research with practical applications is always very helpful and so beneficial for people.

In my view, most impactful research should be considered when compared to methodological excellent. The impact research will be useful and will be read by each and every one. Whereas methodological research will be good and excellent but some only will refer.

I think research that has most impact on the society should be held in higher esteem because it could potentially help humankind. Hopefully this research has been conducted using sound methodology.
I think the two opinions have the same importance. Outstanding research can usually inspire more readers to think the excellent applications for solving real-world problem. In many cases, outstanding research may be due to inadequate exposure, resulting in fewer opportunities for further reflection on how to apply it to practical problems.

Armchair research is considered a thing of the past. If it does not create impact it is better not done.

Please allow me to differ with you. About 18 months ago, I wrote an article that was essentially "armchair". It was a conceptual analysis of issues and topics that I had thought about carefully and believed to be important. My sense is that it has had at least some impact, despite being armchair. Already it has been viewed more than 17,100 times on its journal's website and has been downloaded nearly 1,700 times. That is more views that 97% of other articles in the suite of journals, and more than 91% of downloads from those journals. It also has been cited 21 times according to Google Scholar
Not bad for armchair stuff - huh?

Gulzar - As a researcher, if your method and technique is correct, your content and conclusions will most probably be correct. It is the nature and scope of the problem which is the deciding factor. Yes, impactful research making a difference in solving real-world problem is definitely better than methodologically excellent research if it does not make a difference in every day living. I think, it is better to write a methodologically excellent as well as an impactful research publications.
My research problem is about global nursing shortage. There are so many exceptional research outcomes published in high-tier journals; however, the problem is worsening and worsening. I believe that research is worthy when it contributes to making a difference in solving real-world problem.
Impactful means currently important and methodological excellence refers to good elucidation. The first is most for exact sciences while the second for the Humanities
