Usually, after the "maximum number of total steps" sentence, the error states the sentence starts with "case: ....".

Could you tell us what it says after "case:"?

i have the same problem in modeling and run model of 11 sore RC building.

i try many solution to solve this but just one of them is work. i tell some of them.

first it may caused by unstability of your model. unstability may Occur by wrong connection between joints or elements or by define very large load on your model (which may cause by wrong units or Inobservance) or by not define beam on free edge of pannels you can define Petty beam whitout stiffnes there.

finnally my problem was this, i assigned very small stiffness modifier to a large group of my elements (specially columns wich are shear wall's boundry zone).

to get what is your problem you can two things

first clik on every option of checking model and run chek model of etabs and solve all warnings.

second off pdelta option of your model then run it and start animiation of model then search for Subnormal displacement in your model and try find problem on this area.

if none of them are not work you cane share me your file maybe i can find problem.
