I am interested in investigating the role of physical exercise on MMPs and it is well-known that after over exercise MMPs (mostly MMP2 and MMP9) expression increases. My interest on the cellular dysfunctions (not diseases) mediated by MMPs during/after over exercise. Which points and/or dysfunctions do I look for?

There are now several papers implicating MMP-2 in particular, in the degradation of components of the sarcomere, especially under conditions of oxidative stress (such as heavy exercise). There is also a 65kD form of MMP-2 that has been shown to localize to mitochondria, and activate NFkB by degrading IFkB. The 65kD form is exclusively intracellular induced by oxidative stress.
