I am having difficulty in building up vacuum in my mass spec (LCMSMS QTRAP 4000). When the system is turns on, the vacuum status shows pumping down. Then backing pump status normal, then interface turbo pump says normal. Before the accelerating status of analyzing turbo pump says normal, the vacuum starts venting in the vacuum status (see the pictures 1 and 2). Now the flickering green light (vacuum status) on the instrument is off.
Is there anything I can do if it doable that i am missing before the technical support arrives ?
Try rapidly cycling the power (turn main OFF then immediately back ON) before the system shuts down because the analyzer pump did not come up to speed. If the analyzer does not reach full speed after a certain period of time the instrument will automatically shutdown. When the analyzer is accelerating turning the system OFF then immmediately back ON resets the time interval and the analyzer turbo should have enough rotational inertia or spin left to give ample time and allow a full restart. If you have a Varian HS602 rough pump this might not work if the start sequence takes a long time due to the rough pump not being rountinely maintained. This behavior suggests that the analyzer turbopump power supply might be weak or the turbopump iteslf needs servicing (new bearings and truing). My first repair would be to replace the analyzer turbopump power supply which is much cheaper than replacing the analyzer turbopump.
