This is a really interesting question - I would love to see such data from across the world pulled together. A challenge! Will you keep this broad to include all types of aquaculture (fish, shellfish, seaweed)?

Yes, I think that is logical. I was told that the group from St Barbara (Univ California) also had the goal of mapping global aquaculture (and freshwater fisheries) and had some resources to bring some major players to meet with them. I will be interested to see how their initiatives proceed. Perhaps others know more about this.

For Greece, the spatial distribution of the farms (mostly sea bass and sea bream and in certain areas shellfish farms) is not available on line, but only in grey literature. Statistics on aquaculture production is reported in the Hellenic Statistical Authority and are openly available. There is not any official data of each farm production separately. You can contact me as regards data from Greece.

Data for Greece have been compiled in the framework of the project MARISCA (http://www.marisca.eu/index.php/en/maps/maps-of-human-activities-in-the-aegean-sea/aquaculture). You may contact me if you would like to have the GIS layer.

We (Scottish Wildlife Trust Living Seas Team) built an interactive map earlier this year that includes all the salmon farms, shellfish farms and other fish farms in Scotland. You can find maps of aquaculture locations on the Baltic coasts of Finland, Sweden, and Denmark on http://maps.helcom.fi/website/mapservice/. To get the locations, click on "Pressures and Human Activities", then "Baltic Sea Pressure and Impact Index", then "Human Activities", then "Finfish mariculture" or "Shellfish mariculture". You can then click on each farm for additional info including the owner. In some cases production is also indicated.

Happy to report the work at NCEAS by Gage Clawson was just published compiling >16,000 known mariculture locations, and using a simple spatial model to map an additional ~80,000 farm locations.
