Conference Paper Reduced Graphene Oxide Synthesis via Improved Hummers' Method

The synthesis of graphene oxide requires the presence of a very powerful oxidant which is potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and a concentrated acid such as sulfuric acid. Other methods use potassium chlorate (KClO3) in the presence of fuming nitric acid (HNO3) or concentrated sulfuric acid.

Another approach for this synthesis is to replace sodium or potassium chlorate with phosphoric acid (H3PO4). The latter is easier to use and represents less danger compared to other reagents and combines well with potassium permanganate to have excellent graphite oxidation. Phosphoric acid combines well with potassium permanganate for excellent oxidation of graphite. After oxidizing the graphite, it is still necessary to exfoliate it to obtain OG sheets. This exfoliation can be carried out in different ways. The most common and widely used method is sonication of the oxidized graphite in a solvent. Other methods of exfoliation are also used to get the GO such as thermal exfoliation.
