Knowing that SARS-CoV-2 can cause pyroptosis and hyperinflammation in severe cases, and involves mainly macrophages, vaccine prepared from SARS-CoV-2-infected macrophage would be one of potent therapeutic approachs for COVID-19.
SARS-CoV-2 can infect monocytes/macrophages and recruit uninfected immune cells resulting in massive inflammatory responses later in the disease. Uncontrolled production of pro-inflammatory mediators contributes to ARDS and cytokine storm syndrome. Hence, Macrophage-based vaccine is a potential vaccine candidate for SARS-CoV-2.
