I have a Luna Silica column. I want to know can I use it in HILIC mode? a reason that I ask this is that column is not a HILIC column but is used in normal phase.
another question is about difference between a normal phase silica and HILIC silica. what is the different?

Leila Rastegar: There is no such thing as an "HILIC" column. HILIC is a mode of chromatography (i.e. RP, NP, IEX...), not a column. Please do not be tricked by marketing/sales people who want you to buy another "special" column. HILIC mode is not frequently used, but does have many useful applications. Once you understand the basic principles of this mode, then you can determine if it can be applied to your sample on a range of ordinary, high quality polar stationary phase silica based columns. *Please get some local help from someone experienced in HPLC.
You already have the column in your lab. It does notnhurt trybit in the HILIC mode and see how it goes. What do you have to lose?

Thank you for your guidance. I thought maybe the sorbent physico-chemical feature is different in normal silica compare to HILIC one.
As you know, we can not use silica gel 60 (107734) with an aqueous solution because water can wash silica. but it can be used in normal phase. I thought maybe this role is also true for HPLC silica column.
William Letter is correct. You may use that Luna column in HILIC mode and it will work very well. However, the water adsorbed on the column will be nearly impossible to displace, and so retention times in other solvents will be different than they used to be for a given compound. The column is still perfectly good, but will work best for HILIC. I've converted silica columns to HILIC, and then used them only for HILIC. Water has an extreme "memory effect" with silica gel. Other solvents exhibit a memory effect as well:

We have found that a pure wash with HPLC grade IPA can revive many, but not all of those columns, but we have always taught that you should label and dedicate the column to the specific application. *HPLC Columns are inexpensive consumable items compared to the value of the time, methods, materials and data acquired.

HILIC column is mainly used for separating polar compounds. But Silica HILIC columns contain very strong cation exchange properties and mainly used for the analysis of polar isomeric compounds..Polar samples always have good solubility in the aqueous mobile phase used in HILIC. you can use Luna HILIC column for polar component separation.
