Google scholar updates when you have your own google scholar profile with the good keywords is really a reliable mean. Alternatively, searching only among "online first" articles on Springer and Science Direct websites
Google scholar alerts are incredibly useful, but you won't avoid that problem of avoiding reading the same title over and over again. I have a crude way of doing it with Excel...
-Highlight all the journal articles in each scholar email, copy, past in an Excel sheet (all in the same column). It will be copying more than one row of information per article. When you paste, make sure you keep your text in HTML format.
-In excel, go to Data->Remove duplicates...this will remove all duplicates for journal article titles.
-In excel, home, go to Sort & Filter->Custom sort. Select "Font color" under "Sort on", and then under "order" select the color blue. Click ok. All your journal titles will go to the top of your excel sheets, and are still hyperlinks.
Granted, with this method you don't have the author list and beginning of the abstract attributed to the title anymore. I can't figure out a way of exporting the list of articles from my google scholar alerts--if you could, you may be able to keep the authors and the beginning of the abstracts with the journal titles.
I use an RSS feed to alert me when new articles are published in one of a number of relevant journals. I also have an RSS feed linked to a Scopus search, which only alerts me when there are new results.
I create search alerts in different databases on my topic and subscribe to table of contents alerts using JournalTOCs (see http://www.journaltocs.hw.ac.uk/)
