Like some syrups, can tablets and capsules be flavor coated? Especially for children and adults who can't take regular tablets or capsules. Are there any side effects for flavor-coating a tablet or capsule? Besides masking taste of the medicine, can the smell of medicine be masked?
Yes its possible to flavor the tablets by imparting flavoring agents in the blend for uncoated tablets / by incorporating flavors in coating solution for coated tablets. For capsule formulation, no need to coat the capsule with flavors. If at all you want to empty the capsule contents for administration, you can even incorporate flavors in blend for encapsulation.
Flavour coating of tablets to improve taste, mask smell and improve appearance has been going on for ages. The only problem I have read about relating to this, has to do with getting the composition right so that active ingredients release profile is not affected while maintaining the final drug product integrity.
