I am attempting to make LEDs from quantum dots for the first time in awhile for our lab. Many of the approaches follow a method which deposits LiF and Aluminum as the cathode. In our lab, we have easy access to a sputterer. Can LiF be deposited by a sputterer?
LiF may work by sputtering, but take about the purity of the gases. And, LiF is isolating, so you may need an RF-sputter coater, DC sputtering may not work because of charging etc. As Surbhi mentioned above, thermal evaporation is feasible. Because of the better vacuum conditions in thermal evaporation, you won't be faced with impurities, as in the case of sputtering. I made quite nice experience with LiF evaporation from resistively heated tungsten boats. Good luck, Dirk
Answering my own question, after coming in contact with the manufacturer and other journal articles, it is possible to sputter LiF, but as Dirk mentioned above, the RF component is required. It is possible to sputter LiF using thermal evaporation or sputtering.
