We had a discussion in the lab today, does fever actually kill bacteria?

I know from several courses that fever (body temp. going up) is meant to kill bacteria and viruses during infection.

Yet, I am pretty sure that the increase is too small to kill them off.

If I try to grow K. pneumoniae at 40°C they probably still grow. Perhaps slower.

So... does fever actually kill bacteria?

What are we missing here?
