Renal damage and renal failure, as you correctly pointed out are well documented in Coronavirus disease and Covid 19 resulting in a more severe disease and high mortality. The pathogenesis of acute renal damage may be directly due to the virus tropism of renal epithelium. As the main binding site for SARS-CoV2, is the ACE2 protein, which is expressed in the kidney much more than the lungs, this maybe one of the factors in the pathogenesis of renal impairment. Also the cytokine storm seen as an immune response to the novel virus cause large release of cytokines which cause inflammatory damage to tissues including the kidney. DIC and associated multi-organ failure may lead to tiny clots in the bloodstream due to thrombosis and coagulopathy which may clog blood vessels of the kidney and impair its function.

Kidney damage may be due to various reasons in COVID- 19, like you mentioned and use of high doses of different drugs. Injuries to the renal tissue may be caused by the production of free radicals, so by using the therapeutic doses of Vitamin C could reverse the tissue damage in COVID-19 patients . I would like if any nephrologists in this group to comment on this aspect.
Pateints with very high Blood Pressure ( Hypertension ) is quite possible . As the HTN pateints with or without drug affects the kidneys more or less . Now followed
by the attack of Covid19 !

IMHO, a predominant mechanism is endotheliolitis/vasculitis and massive intravascular coagulation, particularly within renal blood vessels >>> renal AKI. The virus seems to be directly causative by avidly binding to the vessel wall via heparin-binding domains of glycocalyx. It is not solely my hypothesis - good reserch based, originating from the first SARS time. My humble hypothesis is: use LMWH as a prophylactic agent. ?
