I always receive offers to submit a paper for publication in journals stating they need one more article before they can publish. This makes me wonder if they are genuine.
Yes you are correct. You can call them by another name "Predatory journals". They often ask for so called 'processing fees'. You can find list of predatory journals in the web. Simply avoid them.
The rise in number of people in research has developed a competitive model among researchers. The researchers with publications are the ones who get recognition. This has led to the increase in number of "JOURNALS" with little or no benefit to the existing body of knowledge. The sole purpose of such publishing house is to gain monetary benefits. There are journal publishing houses who boldly announces publication within a day/week with some amount of publishing fee. The research community needs to develop some mechanism to filter out such scandalous publishers for the benefit of research and development. Unfortunately, in many countries, such journals are still recognized for evaluation of merits in recruitment.
Dr. Kenneth is always on point. The easier the process of review, the more the likelihood that patronage would increase in "Spam" or "Predatory" (as it is generally called) Journals. Academic integrity just don't boil down to maintaining a good quality research, but looking for appropriate legitimate Journal to publish in.
Thanks everybody for the above contribution; all comments and discussions are valuable and are appreciated.
I have a couple of questions...
If we’re allowing the ’predatory’ journals continue publishing papers without or with limited peer review isn’t this contaminating evidence? As much as going to reputable journals is the acceptable way, for an early researcher like me, I would be tempted to have my paper published in such a journal especially if the work was rejected in the so called high impact, reputable journal.
What is the role of the expert researchers in protecting people like me and my work from the predatory ‘spam’ journals if they are let to continue? What are we doing to the body of evidence and reputation of research?
Do not get lured buy such offers. Always keep in mind that proper reviewing improves the quality of our papers. There is no scope of improvement of papers in those journals where the entire process of reviewing is bypassed because they are interest only in money making not in the quality of the papers.
Excellent explanations Dr. Farid. I agree that we cannot put out of business 'spam' or predatory journals. Rather, what we can do is that we must acquaint ourselves with their distinct characteristics and shun them completely.
Could I request that there’re no personal attacks.
I had put the question forward after being bobarded by emails requesting that I submit papers for publication from journals some of which I had never heard of and wondered how genuine they were.
I am sure all contribution positive or negative, advice and links have so far been useful not just to me, in my early research career, but the wider RG community.
I would therefore, greatly appreciate discussions or debate and not personal attack, thanks.
