There is a specific period after which a Patent expires. Ironically this rule does not apply to Journals, collection of invaluable amounts of research work carried out by mostly by commoner's money. Isn't it necessary to make research work (older scientific work than 20 years) public?
I agree with your point, because all the two decade old results should be shared by all to make advances in scientific research.
This may be applicable to older editions of a book if it has got multiple editions
I totally agree with you, if people study those old articles, they will get more experience, as a result, those people will get more knowledge. I, as a teacher, I like to give my students everything that I know about a topic, so, they usually come up with new and good ideas.

20-year old articles would contain out of date data, of little value to most. In some fields even 10-year old data can be out of date. The real solution will be the expansion of Open Educational Resource (OER); access to current data, "fresh out of research". That is going to be a topic that will generate huge debate over the next few years.
Of course there is no harm in having access to the 10 or 20-year old journals, so that more people can use them for a literature review.

This is but a desire which has nothing to do with reality. Certainly, it is a nice idea.
I can even propose to abolish the poverty.
Patent expires after 20 years. And then why not the papers? I guess making newly published articles public means that journals will have to charge from the authors for their articles to be published.
The foundations of modern theories lie in older articles. If the journals older than 20 years made it public researchers and professors in the colleges/universities where on line journal access is NOT available will be greatly benefited. I wonder why top brass journals such as Nature and Science still keep older articles away from a group of needy people!!
I heard nature made their articles public through a system called redcube. Any comments?
