To me, the thought of becoming a chemist deep rooted in my mind when I was doing my pre-university studies.
Pre-university studies form students' interest, motivation and attitude towards a particular scientific career. Suddenly one can't pursue any scientific career.
Our test and attitude towards a particular filed of study begun in schools prior to university. We develop some innate desires and likes in things that catch our mind and we desire to continue studying such particular field. For me, for instance I had a good feeling and liking of doing mathematics since elementary school, but the focus was not that strong and I did not know what I will become just by liking mathematics in the place I grew up. Certainly for most of us, the blue print begun at early ages of our schooling, but some are also enter in to a particular field and become prominent scientists right after they develop an abrupt passion to a particular field after they graduated from university.
Pre-University study is a future cross road for a student to decide which way their vocation tends to move. This is a very basic step, but many students are unaware of decision. In many developing countries, this is influenced by others and very less by the student.
Looking back, a pre-university study can have bearing on the subsequent undergraduate study & the eventual career of a student. Based on personal observation, most of the students who were doing well in the pre-university study will continue their preferred discipline of study in their undergraduate study (they can relatively easy to get scholarship, sponsorship or financial support) whereas students that were not doing well in the pre-university might at a cross road to choose undergraduate course that can land them for a secured job & salary (being pragmatic) or continue to pursue their dreamed course / scientific career. So, earlier a student being counseled appropriately on their preference, passions, competency and financial support capability, this can better prepare them in choosing the right pre-university study e.g. arts, commerce, bio-maths, double maths science streams etc.
