In a new version (Canoco 5) there are few new options: variation partitioning build - in the analysis, use of GLM, and the possibility to use traits data. Does anybody have experience with Canoco 5 already?
1. Particularly in analyzing change over time in the plant community (with a additional factor acting at the known moment in time, but not incorporated in the environmental data sensu stricto). I know the principal response curves procedure, I'm wondering if there is a different/better approach.
2. Analyzing the changes of mean plant traits over time in community, but within a relatively small data set (something like 16 plots, recorded for a couple of years). Is this even possible? what kind of results do you get? What are the possible mistakes in interpretation?

I think for the first question you can use unconstrain analysis with suplementary variable. It is PCA analysis using all respond variables for your plant community then you can add other variable as suplementary variable to support your ordination. the suplementary variables will not include directly in the calculation of your respond ordination. it is just suplementary. the help menu in the canoco 5 is very useful, so you can have a look on it.

Thanks for the book - i had this one already. Canoco 5 is extended with plenty of new analysis options, so this one is so-so useful. Useful for a general principles - but not in terms of guiding through all the specific options.

try PCA. plot_1_year1, ..., Plot_10_year_1,....plot_1_year_5...., plot_10_year_5 ...arrange plot and year data in rows like this. cwm trait values in columns....plot the PCA loadings of each plot by year, you will get your desired plot. :)
