Especially for newcomers to tertiary education, do they need to focus on research + present + write + publish like the oldtimers, or do they just need to focus 100% on their online teaching activities?
Yes, publishing and communicating research results in reputable journals is still relevant today and in the future. During COVID period, the society expects latest research findings in marketing, education, health etc. Medical researchers are expected to find COVID vaccine and all other forms of medical support to save lives and reduce human burden Mudassir Khan
From what I've been seeing in my own limited context is that writing + publishing output has gone down... when in truth 'working from home' should have led to even higher output. Excuse given? "Online teaching takes too much time to handle, SO we can't focus on much else!"
It will be relavent for all period. Research is a continuous process. COVID time is an opportunity to explore more and more about Future trends, new normal. The research has to find new ways to adopt the new things. No end for publishing and publications in any time.
With the COVID-19 era, PoP becomes more in demand because Academics give more time to conduct research and consequently publish their research outputs. Research outputs are bases for innovations and strategies in National or Local communities that may address various social and political issues. Further, simple conclusions or generalizations that are not backed with research data may not be credible. Thus, PoP is not only relevant but necessary in this pandemic era.
It all depends on what you want to become--a lowly teacher in a teaching program or a prominent professor in a respectable institution of higher education. Corvid virus is NO EXCUSE, especially when most of today's research is carried out online. The Ph.D. is only a document that says you can do research. The one(s) on the bottom of their graduating class they call them doctors. So take it from there.
In my opinion, both Research and teaching are the two sides of the same coin. Research and teaching are two important wings of education. So, both should go hand in hand. Good teaching methods depend on good research. As online education is a substitute for offline education at this time of Corona, so it has to continue till the normal situation comes. But Research works need to continue all the time whether it is online or offline. There should be more and more publications to continue and strengthen the pedagogy of education.
I will definitely share parts of all these critical insights to 'push' newcomer lecturers into researching and publishing. They need to divide their time between core teaching / lecturing responsibilities EQUALLY with researching + presenting + writing + publishing ✅ No more excuses!!!
Folks, I have to say this: there is a difference in the type of research we do. The attempt of field or lab research is to explore the unknown in an attempt to make it less unknown. Writing a textbook is not research, because you are writing to your students not to your colleagues. Your research paper should be refereed and accepted by established researchers. There is an old saying "if you publish a textbook and it is making money, it is not research." Don't waste your time publishing descriptive articles in mediocre journals or magazines. You won't fly, especially with a dean who knowns nothing about research or publishing.
Wrote this last week to try to illustrate the points we've been discussing. Thank you again, learned colleagues. Thank you so very much for your comments and ideas.
With the current situation, new researchers have to focus 100% on the type of research they do. online teaching activities are basically done with proper research. therefore newcomers to tertiary education will focus on the their teaching activities on line as well as offline.
Yes, I think so because the pandemic is an obstruction towards their career. This period researcher should take it as an avenue to publish more research work than before.
Now that activities are reduced as a result of the COVID - 19 pandemic I think the new comers and even the older ones should focus more on research and publication.
Dear Airil Haimi Mohd Adnan important discussion for the moment we are in because of the pandemic. Even considering the current context, many institutions maintained the evaluation process for effective positions or even for career progression with the same parameters as before the pandemic. And since most of these processes are based on publication of articles in indexed journals, in practice nothing has changed. In other words, working conditions are more difficult but the charges continue. One way of looking at this is that publishing is attitudinal regardless of threats of tenure or pandemic. Unless it is field research, pandemic should not be an excuse.
In this time of crisis and uncertainty, we want to emphasize to everyone that nothing is more important than taking care of your health and sanity, and that of everyone around you. Publishing will not and should not be anybody’s first priority in the coming months.
Even in these times of “publish or perish”, when scientists are under increasing pressure to publish more papers and of a higher quality if they want to survive, good science still requires time. A scientific study, like wine, is a product that requires repose and maturation. When researchers finish writing their work, there is still a long way to go. From the time a study is first submitted to a scientific journal until it is finally published on its pages, months or even years can pass; if not initially rejected, the work must still undergo a lengthy peer review process that turns a paper into science accepted by the community. Even in these cases, a number of studies end up being retracted some time later, if fraud or simply bad science is discovered.
To write a paper, detail knowledge of the context is the first requirement, may it be online or offline. And quality of research is more important than number of publication.
