Sodium, the salt of life and activity, is mandatory for normal happy life. However, a lot has been written and told about its bad effects and association with dangerous diseases and complications like hypertension and strokes..etc. Yet very little is written on the enormous health benefits of this ion which bathes every cell in our body and maintains homeostasis 24/24 throughout life.I do not recommend low sodium in water, especially in hot weather areas.
Water constitutes 60% of our body weight . Salt content of water is not crucial , as we get salt from other sources . In fact RO water may not have any salt . The daily requirement of water is 1.5 - 2.5 liters / day & the salt content can vary from 5 - 10 gms/day . Sweat contains salt & water , therefore replacement requires water & some salt . The body has the ability to excrete both excess water & salt in normal circumstances . But in salt & water depletion , for eg due to excessive sweating or diarrhea , only water replacement without salt can cause retention of water causing hyponatremia .
Risk of salt sensitivity increases with age. We get sodium from many foods which is sufficient for a healthy man. Sodium is added to a number of foods as flavors, preservatives and additives. So, I do not recommend sodium in water regularly.
