There are other options. If we all voted via a systemised online way monitored by Independent bodies(anonymous) with Strong Firewall, rather than ballot boxes as in Nigeria, there would be less corruption. It would be free and fair.
There is no other option as of now. In the biggest democracy we have to have ballot or evm. We have many remote area where internet is not working. In india election is like festival which is shouldered by large number of officials

Empirically, there are no democracies without voting; voting is evidently sine qua non for democracy.
But vote for leaders? Leaders are the cause of all the world’s troubles and tragedies. The only time we ever hear of a "good leader" is in a context of countering some "bad" (criminal) leader.
In a democracy the people vote for laws—for example in Switzerland. In Switzerland there are no leaders. The people vote for legislators and administrators but there is no leader at all. Switzerland is arguably the world’s best run country and it is one of the wealthiest per capita. And in terms of foreign policy, it has not had a war for 170 years.

There was an interesting episode of "IDEAS" by CBC, where the host analysed with his guest (I am very sorry about not remembering the name of the guest or the name of the episode) the relevance of an "online political party". The premise was that representative democracy is not representative in many cases, and by using technology we could go back to a more direct democratic process. Basically the person elected by the "online party" would have to vote in Parliament (Assembly or Congress, depending on the country) accordingly to the majority's opinion of the party members, expressed by an online poll on specific issues. The catch here, and what would make this system work, is that if the elected representative did not vote according to the party's wishes, this person would be removed from his/her seat, and replaced with another representative.
This is an idea worth doing some research about.
