Yes, you should try R. There is a package called Vegan for the community of ecologists, that contains popular methods of multivariate analysis. If you are new to R try also RStudio as development environment.
PAST is very good, but the data setup can be fiddly and not always intuitive. There is no built-in help, rather a 222-page PDF. That said, it is has a wide range of tests, is very quick and produces graphs and tables which can be easily copied into word processors. It runs directly from a single file, so no installation is necessary. You will need to unlock the file before use (see the properties pages of the file itself before you run it).
Thanks to all for your reply. Though R is becoming widely popular, and in future I should learn to use it, but currently PAST seems good. The objective of my work is to segregate species according to their habitats and it worked better in NDMS method in PAST. However, using the presence/absence or (0,1) data what type of similarity measure could be utilised?
