To understand individuality in the fungi is a difficult proposition, and except when using molecular tools, one cannot be sure about individuality of a fungal species. In this situation, which methods could be utilized to ascertain the structure of abundance in the case of macrofungi?

This problem is difficult to resolve indeed. Macrofungi are usually treated the same way as clonal plants or colonial invertebrates are and they are commonly assessed by artificial units (modules) such as fruitbodies. This approach is not perfect but it allows to compare your data with data other researchers obtained and to get relative results for comparison within your research. Besides, the protocols are strongly depending on fungal ecology - soil fungi are different to wood inhabitants and so on. For more details you can see Foster M., Mueller G., Bills G.
