How are the patients with severe damage in corneal or retinal surfaces being treated currently? As far as I understand, for such implantation the shortage of donor, poor graft survival and allergenic rejection of natural graft are some of the biggest problems. I am curious if any synthetic implant could successfully pass through FDA channel? Please share if any knowledge on this. Thanks!
check out these papers on SLET (simple limbal epithelial transplantation) technique where limbal stem cell preparation is used to repair corneas severely damaged by acid burn or disease: DOI: 10.4103/ijo.IJO_117_19, DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ophtha.2015.12.042. This requires small biopsy from a couterpart healthy eye of the same patient (autologous transplantation).

Dohlmans Artifical Cornea. For the retina, you can look at : 1. Argus family of retinal implants 2.Nanoretina NR600
