what type of evapotranspiration you want to calculate. there are three main evapotranspiration: reference evapotranspiration(ET0), maximal crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and actual evapotranspiration(ETa). if you want to calculate ETo , you can use the FAO-Penman Monteith as considered as the most accurate method for ET0 calculation ( see FAO-56 paper). if you want to calculate crop evapotranspiration, you need to know firstly the crop coefficient (Kc) of each crop and then multiplied Kc by ET0 to get ETc. I think your question is how to calculate spatial ETc,? if this, you can use the remote sensing data

For calculation of the reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is usually used the Penman-Monteith model.

I think if you do not have too many gridded points you might not need a spreadsheet model. As it is you can export the FAO ETo calculator data as "Climate file for Aquacrop". The ETo file can esily be opened in excel using the text import wizard and manipulated thereafter.

It is reliable and I have used it. It requires some meteorological data and sunshine hour which may be calculated using another calculator for this purpose.

The main software has different options including FAO ETo as well for different methods of reference evaporation equations.

Why not simply implement the Penman-Monteith equation in Excel? Shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours. Then you'll also import your meteorological data in excel and you will have your ET0s in Excel.

If you are using GIS and you have the availability of accurate maps of the meteorological variables, you could use the map algebra system of your preferred GIS to calculate reference evapotranspiration with the Penman-Monteith equation as described by FAO.

If you haven't the maps of the meteorological variables you could interpolate them before calculating ET0. This approach requires a robust background about spatial interpolation. You could also calculate ET0 in the points where the meteorological station are placed and then estimate the ET0 map. This last approach is the more disputable, in my opinion, if you have great spatial variability.

I made a software to calculate (estimate) the evapotranspiration according to FAO methodology. The software runs in Microsoft Windows but it is in portuguese. I can assist you if you want.

The Univerty of Idaho has developed a software (Ref-ET) for calculating ETo by several methods (e.g. Penman-Monteith - FAO56, Hargreaves-Samani and others). The user creating a input file with the meteorological variables, the software calculates the ETo and provides an output file with ETo and other variables necessary to ETo calculate. The output file is in ASCII and can be export to Excel, MAtlab, R or other software.

You may use CROPWAT (which can be downloaded freely from the FAO website). This model uses Penman-Montieth model which is recommended by the FAO to estimate the reference evapotranspiration. Another option is you may use an excel spreadsheet to estimate the ETo. I have a template.

The template I developed can be used to estimate daily ETo employing Penman-Monteith and other methods.

Please check the paper "Estimating evapotranspiration of irrigated rice at the West Coast of the Peninsular of Malaysia" which is available to download freely.

I agree with what said above. It is very important to know available variable in your area. Most equations that calculate evapotranspiration need weather measurement data and some of them such as Penman, penman-montheith and Bowen-ratio Energy-balance methods need a lot of factor but they give more accurate results.

Regarding your question about a module that integrates evapotranspiration calculation in in ArcGIS, there is no such module as my best knowledge. I don't think it is worth thinking of that since ET won't change that much from area to another unless you are working on large scale evapotranspiration modeling.

You can use calculated ET values and add it as a layer in the ArcGIS or put the equation as a model to calculate for each cell.

If you are trying to use site specific irrigation scheduling, SS-Toolbox software is used for precision farming and can accumodate your interests in irrigation scheduling

To calculate potential or reference evapotranspiration [PET] Penman Monteith is considered as the most accurate method for PET calculation. For other calculations appropriate coefficients are required.

helo Noha, how did you finaly map ur ETo on ArcGIS using meteorological data from one station?

There may be some software with spreadsheet type. However, most software/calculators are automatic and from few input data give reference evapotranspiration (alfalfa). This reference Et is multiplied by crop coefficients which may be downloaded from FAO website.

As far as mapping is concerned, it may be interpolated from points/areas for which it is actually calculated. Since, reference Et is sensitive to both latitudes and altitudes (also faces), correction factors may be adopted for both, find a reliable surface for evaporation of a crop or from agricultural areas.

Another really good model is SPAW. It has excellent routines for ind. crop types by time of year and rooting depths. It is a continuous simulation model that computes AET based on a multilayer soil moisture model, the rooting depth, and PET computed from daily surface observations. Since it integrates plant/soil dynamics in so much detail, I think its more accurate than just PM with a crop coefficient. It is free. Just google SPAW. Saxton who developed it was one of the original pedotransfer function guys with Rawls etc.

Please search "RefET" in google. It is developed by Allen... It is free and perfect software for Eto calculations...

Remote Sensing (RS) is a very practical way to determine evapotranspiration particularly in countries without sufficient climatology data.

FAO ET Calculator generates ETo in text format which can be transported to excel spreadsheet. You can use following method

1. Calculate ETo Using FAO ET calculator

2. Go to export results Tab.

3. Export file to report and save it in Report folder.

4. Open Excel

5. Go to Data Tab

6. Select from Text and export the file.

I am trying to calculate ETc, the actual evapotranspiration for my thesis on nitrate-N leaching in row crop agriculture.  I am using the mass water balance equation to estimate nutrient loads exiting the root zone from soil water nutrient concentrations. The illinois Climate Network provides potential evapotranspiration from a nearby weather station.  Calculating ETc seems difficult, and I was wondering if anyone has a template already in Excel using the dual crop coefficient provided by the FAO to get Kcb and Ke.   Any advice or input is appreciated.

FAO Penman-Monteith is the well recognized method in calculating ETo based different options of data sets. Results can be validated with Pan evaporation data. Programming code can speed up the calculation . I can produce output ETo for 10 GCM models with 3 RCPs by single click from 2010 to 2099. It allows in computing ETo very fast less than 1 minute.

After calculating the Reference evapotranspiration using the FAO ETO calculator program/AquaCrop model using the necessary climate parameters (Tmax, Tmin, RF, wind speed, Rh and solar radiation/sunshine hours). You can save your files including your ETo. The ETo and other files can be opened using Notepad. Then after you can copy and paste the ETo into excel spreadsheet. Then you can arrange the columns into separate column. You can use it. Try it!

I recently found a work created by R. L. Snyder, Biometeorology Specialist (Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California) and S. Eching, Senior Land and Water Use Scientist ( California Department of Water Resources, Office of Water Use Efficiency) on 2012 and revised on 2009. It uses the Penman-Monteith and the Hargreaves-Samani equation for estimating ETo. It uses daily weather data for the estimation.

FAO Penman-Monteith method is recommended. You can develop an mouse-driven tool for computing ETo using programming language. It will give you faster computation by selecting the option. All inputs data will be stored in database.By choosing dates (duration), you can compute ETo and plot them as well. PMDay is excellent example and you can do more interactively. For developing application, you must have clear understanding PMDay.xl computation. I just attached a wizar to understand the application. This application can compute 100 years ETo within 1 minute.

CropWat 8.0 is a recommended by FAO. It may not useful some regions now. You need daily sunshine hours data. Modern meteorological station uses solar radiation now. You can write Code for your own purpose and this would be robust. You can add all conditions and adjusted factors from FAO 56 Guidelines. I recommend to develop own tool using local meteorological data considering various options. You can use CommandButtons, ListBox and ComboBox and call data from Database Folder.

Saga GIS has the capability. I guess that it would be useful for you for big data computation. I have never used but try to use it.
