I recommend reading McLuhan or studies on his thinking about communication and its impact on culture.
Wikipedia says '"The medium is the message" is a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in any message it would transmit or convey, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived.'
But really what he's saying in his book Understanding Media is that there are disruptive and hard to predict impacts from the technology we use to communicate with. One example he cites is how the telephone revolutionised prostitution in America and lead to the term "call girl" - I'm sure he would have had a lot to say about the current movement towards social media.
If your interested I can pull out the titles of some books I used in my PhD studies regarding how communication channels should influence actors in multi agent simulations.
