Reading is important, yet developing interest in reading is a challenge. I strongly feel that the interest to read extensively especially in the 2nd language is highly related to intrinsic motivation and autonomy. Is there any research done relating extensive reading to Self determination theory?
Hi, I'm not sure what the answer to your question is in terms of self-determination theory, but what I can tell you is that when second langauge learners were skilled to improve their level of comprehension and writing in first year at my university their grades improved - i have looked at three years worth of data in this regard. My assumption would be that when we assisted them in improving their level of skill in terms of their academics this would have positively influenced their level of motivation and self-esteem, and thus their 'need' to self-regulate.
Due to the intercultural approach in my university, a strategy for the development of skills in English Language was design in order to make students (ELT students or not) get in touch with a variety of bibliography from other countries published in English. I must admit that it has not been a complete success but it certainly has proved an upgrade in their motivation owards the English Language.
What I can say for certain is that if we compare motivation and historical need towards knowledge we can easily determine the kind of information can make our students get motivated to a second language. It is up to us to discover those motivations and needs.
When you say extensive reading in in second language ,it is obvious that you have an inclination to go in depth in the study of second language.This may also help you to gain & to acquire a good knowledge of the subject .
With this ,Self motivation should directly come to the surface of your mind provided you are positive in your approach .Self motivation is our merely process of our mind as it is directing the tune of our inner within .
