Hi. We are currently working on a project that aims to supply the light needed by the plant. We come across a research that the growth phase of the plant i.e. seedling stage, vegetative stage, flowering stage, needs different lighting recipe like wavelength and intensity.
Is there anyway that we can determine the growth phase not by observing but by measuring a specific parameter?
Or if there is any idea to determine the light needed by the plant, please comment below. Any help will be much appreciated. We are in dire need of help.

Far red light promotes flowering and seedling growth in shade conditions. Red light is important for stem growth, flowering and fruit production, and chlorophyll production. Blue light mediates plant responses such as phototropic curvature, inhibition of elongation growth, chloroplast movement, stomatal opening and seedling growth regulation. Green and yellow light don't have much impact. Growth phases are seed, germination, growth, reproduction, pollination, and seed spreading. You don't really need parameters because it's fairly easy to identify the stages :)

Just to make things clear. Our project will be designed to automatically detect the current growth phase of the plant. We needed a parameter so that we can automate it for example, we will use a sensor to measure the parameter to identify the growth stage. If there is any. Can you guys name some parameters that can we measure?
Fresh weight (but not very reliable); Dry weight change against time; leaf area of numbered leaf of a given stage in a given phase of growth, but depends on the nature of your experiment i.e. whether destructive or non-destructive then can modify the parameters stated.

If I understood you correctly, it is a technically interesting question! As a solution I can , for example, think of measuring gene expression using a gene-specific DNA probe against cDNA of a target gene transcript, similar to the DNA-microarray concept to produce a light signal which intensity can be measured by the sensor. Alternatively you can use the ELISA concept to look at the expression of developmental stage-specific proteins using antibodies to produce a color or light signal that can also be measured by the sensor. However, it all boils down to two important aspects: the first is which gene or protein you can use as a marker for each developmental stage. This might be species- or plant family-dependent and thus you need transcription information or proteomics information to find genes or proteins that can be used as specific markers for each developmental stage in that species. The second aspect is that you will need to find a way to design an effective procedure to process the samples collected from your individuals (to isolate RNA and produce cDNA or to isolate protein) before applying them to the sensing device. I think there are means to accomplish this (see included references for similar ideas using microfluidic chips). I also advise you to contact a biochemist to help you with the development procedure.

I think you can measure the plant growth stage using for example to measure the leaf area u can use leaf area meter index material which you can google its procedure
