I give you few facts like idea for you research work. Any kind of fault on transmission lines a clearly and precisely detected and located with relay protection devices. Those devices protect transmission lines and disconnect lines from operations because of fault. It detect various faults which can happened, like phase to phase fault, phase to ground fault, any combination of those two types of fault. Also, detect evolving fault, fault start in one phase and jump on another phase. Modern relay protection devices recognized high impedance fault, which is very demanding. Nowadays another system used to detect everything in transmission system and that is Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) with Phasor Measurement Unit. PMU device have sampling rate for 50 Hz for each period, every 20 ms. Those data a very interesting for research because data exist in control room on one server and you can do many research and analyses. For example, you can model transmission system in Matlab application.
