Several reports of viroids infection outside thier host plants are sometimes disputed (Serra P, Carbonell A, Navarro B, Gago-Zachert S, Li S, Di Serio F, Flores R. Symptomatic plant viroid infections in phytopathogenic fungi: A request for a critical reassessment. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 2020 May 12;117(19):10126-8.)
Is there any additional information about viroid infection in oomycetes (and bacteria)?
"... during the long-term coevolution of the parasite and the host in the pathosystem of Solanum spp. – Phytophthora infestans, the potato pathogen PSTVd can be transmitted to another pathogen, the causative agent of late blight, persist and multiply in it under natural conditions. We screened 111 natural isolates of Ph. infestans isolated from plants of various cultivars of potatoes with late blight symptoms collected in 2020 and 2022... 42 isolates of Ph. infestans (19%) at 2020 ... showed a positive diagnostic result by RT-PCR with PSTVd primers P3/P4. Among the 69 isolates of Ph. infestans collected in 2022, ...72% of isolates with diagnostic amplicons were identified. 8 amplicons were sequenced: 3 amplicons representing the complete PSTVd genome and 5 amplicons representing a part of the genome (~260 b.p.). The nucleotide sequences of the clones of the amplification products were identified to species in the BLAST system and deposited in GenBank (ON211287-ON211305).
