How to check the pH of E. coli culture initially? and how to change the pH of the E. coli culture?

I am working on E. coli 15597 prepared in Luria broth. Initially, the pH of LB is 7 after the inoculation of the E. coli it changes to 8.26 is it correct? can bacteria be alkaline?
