Soil water characteristic curve is different when a soil is wetting or drying and this phenomenon is called hysteresis. Some researchers have mentioned some reasons for this phenomena but I'd like to know, is there any laboratory tests for the reason of this phenomenon?
Dear Susha, there is a lot of methods for measuring hysteresis such as filter paper method or axis translation technique. but my question is laboratory methods for the reason of this phenomenon.
You may have a look on Bruand and Tessier, 2000 - Water retention properties of the clay in soils developed on clayey sediments: Significance of parent material and soil history. European Journal of Soil Science, 51, 679-688. Be careful indeed. Difference between dehydration (drying) and rehydration (wetting) may result from the irreversible effects of drying on the structure and related pore geometry.
