Consolidation properties are mostly affected by soil permeability. If the pollution modifies it, then consolidation properties change as well
Pollution (pore fluid chemistry) may also change the type of clay mineral. inter-layer cations in clay may replace with ions in pollution at different content depend on valence of ions, concentration of ions, type of ions, temperature, viscosity of fluid, mechanical disturbance, etc. The hydro-mechanical behavior of clay is therefore affected as a result of the mineral changes.
Due to the pollution-coupled mineral changes mentioned by Mr. Khodadadi, bentonite-containing soils may lose the swelling properties. Following increase of the hydraulic conductivity would mean better drainage and faster consolidation.
