Of course there are computational technique to find DOS from crystal structure (but they appear more like blackbox to me!), but what can be the experimental technique with all the real-life difficulties (not that simplistic Kronig-Penney Model with square-wave potential)? How the experimental data is converted to DOS, suppose EELS or UV-Vis-IR absorption spectra? None of the reserach articles I have encounter clearly delinate the methodology, and certainly not in a generalized manner for all materials. Can you please provide some review articles or textbook chapters?
