Of course there are computational technique to find DOS from crystal structure (but they appear more like blackbox to me!), but what can be the experimental technique with all the real-life difficulties (not that simplistic Kronig-Penney Model with square-wave potential)? How the experimental data is converted to DOS, suppose EELS or UV-Vis-IR absorption spectra? None of the reserach articles I have encounter clearly delinate the methodology, and certainly not in a generalized manner for all materials. Can you please provide some review articles or textbook chapters?
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) probes the local density of electronic states (LDOS) by measuring the tunneling conductance dI/dV. It is, therefore, a standard experimental method to experimentally determine the density of states and the band gap of a material.
and how exactly that dI/dV vs V data is converted to E vs N(E) format of DOS, Pieter Schiettecatte ? Any reference? and would STM work for insulators too? (I do not think the second one is possible)
