It is a great question which I do not know the answer. But, some growth factors require glycosylation to be fully functional. Growth factors from prokaryote tend not to be glycosylated. Theoretically it will be less optimal for cell culture unless the manufacturer modified it after prokaryote synthesized it.
Yes I understood that from the pdf link I attached. That's why I was wondering why some companies, even big ones, like Peprotech and R&D Systems offer only E.coli or CHO-derived growth factors for some. So in that case there is no option of HEK293 derived or HeLa cell derived, which is unfortunate. Also, most people go ahead and use E.coli derived anyway, so reproducibility of protocols from published papers becomes an issue. Anyway, thanks for answering!
Non-glycosylated growth factor might not give you the full potency but most of the time it will not affect your results dramatically. Say like VEGF the glycosylated have longer half life but some studies show the acute effect might not be different from glycosylated one. Protein yield from eukaryote cell is low and harder to purify but CHO is a eukaryotic line which should provide you reasonable glycosylation.
