In addition to the earlier answers, be sure to evaluate if it is a longstanding problem and possibly something like ADHD. Also, is it related to PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc.? How much sleep is the person getting and what is the quality of sleep (e.g., frequent awakenings, snoring). Is there indication of sleep apnea? An individual can attempt to be organized, take notes, and use a calendar or day planner to keep up with appointments, etc. Memory is sometimes less of an issue if we keep well organized and are diligent regarding keeping track of information. Finally, is the person overly focusing on the STM issues? Forgetting information at times is to be expected.
I think it will depend on the age of the patient, because the underlying cause of short memory lmpairment in young adults will be probably different of the same impairment in older adults.
