A basic finding from the empirical literature in Bangladesh is that microfinance can help reduce vulnerability through income diversity, asset accumulation, etc. There are some control group studies that investigate how HHs with ex-ante access to microfinance cope with and recover from floods, etc. I would need some time to list all the relevant literature I have reviewed, but provide some below. InM will shortly release working papers I have helped with on empirical studies into the impacts of microfinance on coping with Monga and with cyclones. In the case of monga, access to microfinance means less likelihood of households to resort to advanced sale of labour, sale of productive assets, etc. . . .
