I was wondering if there is a test to assess children' working memory in a group setting (class room). The sample is composed by 3rd-to-5th grade italian children.
You wonder if there is a test wondering if there is a test to assess children' working memory in a group setting (class room).
I do not know of any test to assess children' working memory in a group setting (class room). However, I can give a suggestion. For example, you can (1) say aloud the following mumbers 7259108 to the focal children; and (2) ask them to write down on a note book the numbers they have just heard both in the direct (i.e., 7259108) and indirect order (i.e, 8019527). Of course, it is more difficult to remember the numbers that were heard in the indirect thn the direct order. Needless to say, the set of numbers (seven) falls into the G.MIller's idea of five plus two numbers. Of course, you can also use words instead of numbers, but a words task has proved to be more difficul than a numbers task.
Good luck for your research.
I think that you are an Italian guy. Sergio Mora, who is your compatriot, may be a person for you to contact. He has worked a lot on memory,
first of all, thank you for your answer. Actually, I was thinking about this solution, even if this means that we won't use a standard and validated test to assess WM. In any case, it's a absolutely a good idea.
Moreover, I would also like to say thank you for your researcher's name suggestion. I will send him a private message on RG asap.
I would recommend Forward Digit Span and/or Backward Digit Span for your age range. If you are interested in a digital assessment the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) has several options to consider: http://www.cambridgecognition.com/cantab/cognitive-tests/memory.
I ne nepsy II, subtest figure memory is spatial memory from new visual material. I don( t know if you get it in Italian norms but you could use it it is non verbal. And in CMS, children memory scale, you could make qith Points location , visual non verbal subtest, also faces immediately remind and the optional subtest for animals and vehicles immediate visual memory.
